is adaptations = modifications?

Question

Posted

My daughter only has accommodations in her IEP and services, no modifications, but school wrote "she attends general education class with adaptations to the curriculum" in a document to be used for an evaluation. I'm not aware of any modifications provided or that there are modifications to Gen Ed curriculum. This is the first time I see the word adaptations in any of my daughter's documents. I thought adaptation = modification. Can someone confirm? If adaptation = modification, then school is inaccurate. They have been wanting to remove her from Gen Ed. My daughter is given the same tasks/assignments/homework as the rest of the class. She has pull outs for math/reading support.

I would write to the person who wrote this & request clarification of what they are referring to.  You see where accommodations are listed in the IEP but can't find what the school is 'adapting' for your child since this isn't specified in the IEP.

I would ask for clarification from the school. "Adaptations" is not a term defined by IDEA.

I didn’t know that. Good to have terms defined by IDEA for clarity and parental understanding. Thanks!
