  1. Thanks J -This was a suggestion from our family but it was quickly vetoed by school administration. There have been nothing but road blocks.
  2. Yes you're right- it is hard and I am quite certain retaliation has already occurred at this point. It could be why my daughter can't see the teacher . I never imagined this would be the case in public school setting. My girls were brought up in the military schools as we moved from post to post and these issues never appeared. What's wrong with a system that doesn't allow parents to speak to a teacher ? Home schooling looks like the only viable option a this point . Its interesting that there is a plethora of research on ADHD, SPD and anxiety and its long term affects yet no one in this school acknowledges a 6 year olds disability. I guess everyone there is neurotypical. Thank you for your candor.
  3. Thank you. We are in CT and it's been an uphill battle from the beginning. My daughter even hired an advocate last year but a lot of the accommodations were not implemented or they were changed based upon the teachers assessment. It is especially difficult when, for example, they don't remind her about there head phones or punish her when she struggles with a lesson by allowing the other kids to play and making her repeat the lesson even though she didn't get it the first time. Only being allowed to stand at her desk occasionally. No protection from comments when kids call her weird. No effort to foster socialization or peer support. This public school system is broken. Lets see... meeting with teachers.. They have to get another teacher to cover the class while that happens-thats their rationale for not having meetings. I am always amazed of the lack of understanding of the teachers but in CT there is no requirement for any education on ADHD or other disabilities. Ironically, the school stated that my grand-daughter was the only child with a 504 in the two kindergarten classes last year. I suspect that means there are kids that are undiagnosed or they have succeeded in downplaying all kids with disabilities, in spite of parental concern. It's a dismal day every day trying to get her to go to school. She classifies as a 2E as well -highly intelligent and just a joy-yet they are destroying her spirit , self esteem and her love of learning. How do you foster resilience in a toxic environment?   4. As of yet we have been unsuccessful in implementing the 504 from last year because the "teacher has to get to know my grand-daughter". Meeting with the teacher is not allowed in this state and there has to be failure and an intervention in a specific subject before any action will be taken, They have a cozy corner but its only allowed at designated times. The school nurse accused my grand-daughter of lying to get out of class-She 6 by the way-with ADHD, anxiety and SPD. We once again are unsure of how to navigate this public school push back when they won't communicate. My daughter is looking into homeschooling as a viable option
  5. You're right- wait and see is our only option at this point. They completed a "screening " ( generated from the PPT meeting) and it looks like they have deemed that an IEP isn't necessary. There is a potential 504 meeting scheduled but I have little hope this will be done because they state they "accommodate every student" at this kindergarten age. It's interesting that the outside evaluations and diagnosed conditions carry no weight and all of the professionals readily recognize that the this struggle isn't uncommon for parents. My daughter will continue outside speech and OT. My sense from the discussion with the outside speech pathologist is that in-school speech therapy is limited in scope and private practitioners can do more . I can see why parents struggle-
  6. Thought I would update on our progress. PPT is scheduled for next week-Up to this point, head phone accommodations have been fulfilled ( Granddaughter is noise sensitive). The school acknowledges that there are shortages with regards to teachers and they are sharing teachers among other schools in the district. SO here were are again.. The school has refused an IEP because her behavior is " good enough" for Kindergarten despite the diagnosis and struggles with adhd and anxiety and she has been out with pneumonia for the last week and was only in school for 1 week. There appears to be intimidation and I believe it has everything to do with money. The sense that 10 minutes can present an accurate assessment of the struggles of an ADHD 5 year old in the classroom without taking the diagnosis and expert assessment into account is mind boggling and extremely frustrating. My daughter is beside herself and we are discouraged.

Are there specific things that parent should be prepared to bring to the PPT other than the assessments from Neuropsychological,speech and OT that have already been completed? There has been little information as to meeting content or parental role from the school.
  9. Thank for you reply! Diagnosed with ADHD,General anxiety disorder and Sensory Processing disorder. Speech and OT have been outside the pre-school system-there was no special ed in the preschool. My daughter has been seeking help since her daughter turned 3 but the assessments have all been completed outside the pre-school system within the last year. We were unaware of the requested time frame-learning as we go..
  10. I have a granddaughter starting Kindergarten and she has already been diagnosed by 2 Neuropsychologists. She is in speech and OT currently ( in pre-school) .Should my daughter be advocating for an IEP? The school called and said she would have to wait until school starts before they will discuss accommodations. She isn't sure what questions to ask or how to proceed despite her best efforts to get information. I am researching as much as I can to assist but as your website states-its not easy! Thank you in advance!
